“Drive-by Saviours is a fine first novel by a fine new writer.”— Stephen Kimber, author of Reparations

FROM THE BACK COVER:
In a crowded world, a single connection could change everything.

Chris Benjamin masterfully, magically weaves together the seemingly disconnected worlds of Mark, a failed social-worker-turned-unhappy-grant-writer coming to the end of an even unhappier relationship, and Bumi, an Indonesian illegal immigrant on the run from his past and the ocd that dogs his present. Their chance encounter on a Toronto subway launches them on a complicated friendship that allows both men to finally confront the demons in their pasts and to find the hope in their futures.
— Stephen Kimber, author of Reparations

Chris Benjamin’s debut novel is part contemporary fiction, part social commentary and part kick-in-the-ass storytelling. Although refreshingly unique in its portrayal of Indonesia’s cultural landscape, with its universal themes of greed, betrayal, family and redemption, Drive-by Saviours transcends both time and place. Through weaving Bumi’s tenacity with Mark’s ennui, Benjamin skillfully elucidates how globalization entangles us all in an artificially exploitive web and how escape can only be found through creating genuine bonds, those that deeply connect us one to another.
— Carla Gunn, author of Amphibian

Chris Benjamin has travelled widely in North America, West Africa, Europe and Asia working as a freelance writer. He writes for several national and regional magazines in Canada on a variety of social justice and environmental issues. He is also the Sustainable City columnist for the The Coast weekly newspaper in Halifax, where he lives with his wife and son.

Congratulations to Benji! :D

Wish I could attend...

Ivan!!! You came to my blog and talked about eggs, and now I feel like eating a boiled egg in the middle of the night when there are none at home and while its raining outside!!

Thanks, Mona.

Good for Chris indeed. Lucky man!

Hey, get the groundskeeper to chase the chickens...or do the cobras and the household lizards or mongooses chase them?
Or at least go to where the chickens roost in the rain. He's gotta find some eggs. :)

PS to Mona.

You're getting an appetite. Good!

Do hens lay eggs in fright?

Ivan, the two photos of yours need a caption below, which says " Spot the differences"!

..Or, to paraphrase an old Fifties
hair permanent ad, "Which twin has the Phoney?" :)

Sounds like one helluva novel. Packs a whallup. Frickin' envious I am. Sure wish I could go the distance -- if it weren't for the whackadoodles buggin' me.

Speakin' of books, hey Mona, I received SHANTARAM via The Walking Man and the coffee house. Thank you. It's next on my reading list.

Uh ... ohh ... hi Ivan.

JR,

I have gone into a Confucian Chinese mode. Negation of of the self, the ego...This despicable thing before you.

Umble. Umble.

Ivan, you are a kind and generous supporter. Thank you kindly for this.

And thanks to the rest of you too, for your interest. If you want to grab a copy, you can do so at most independent bookstores in Canada, plus the big chain stores in Toronto and Atlantic Canada. OR, you can buy it online at http://www.fernwoodpublishing.ca/?mode=cart&action=add&book=457.

And that is enough about me.

Ivan, if you can make it out to the launch, pls bring your book. We can do a swap-n-sign.

Benji,

Thanks much.

Depending on the state of my nerves and finances, I will attempt the thirty mile trip to Toronto on Monday, Oct. 4, this year.

I would certainly be happy to do a swap. There had been an earlier edition of the Fire in Bradford, pulished independently. This time, it's, by Warbrooke Publishers, Montreal.

Heh. Would you take a used book from this man?

Take care.
